Bonaire: Adieu Diesel, Hello Renewables
Two cutting edge non-profits, Amory Lovins’ Rocky Mountain Institute and Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room, have teamed up on a project called Creating Climate Wealth—The Ten Island Renewable Challenge. The goal is to show the world what’s possible and set an example for moving toward a renewable energy future. More than a dozen Caribbean islands—Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Puerto Rico, San Andres (Colombia), St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Turks & Caicos, and the U.S. Virgin Islands—have boldly signed on to creative a renewable, reliable, secure, and affordable energy supply for their citizens.
The latest success story from the initiative comes from the small island of Bonaire (pop. 14,500) off the coast of Venezuela. The island is famous for its marine reefs, which attract some 70,000 tourists every year, and recently completed the transition away from diesel to 100 percent renewable electricity island-wide.
